1 3 Periode 1

The sculpture 1 3 Periode 1 is crocheted from 500 metres of steel rope.

Crocheting is the process of using a hooked needle to form stitches in thread and so producing a woven fabric. I replaced the thread with steel rope, 16mm thick, and crocheted by hand.

The woven fabric evolves from a rhythmic motion. The first rows of stitches are used to anchor a curving S-form, which becomes visible during the continued crocheting process. The materiality of the steel rope causes the form to stretch upwards into space.

Red markings indicate the beginning and the end of the rope, which can be interpreted as one section of an infinitely continuing line.
